James Zeller Named Associate Provost for Budgets, Planning

Johns Hopkins Gazette Online Edition

James J. Zeller Jr., associate dean for administration at the Peabody Institute since 1983, has been appointed associate provost for budgets and planning, Provost Steven Knapp announced.

Zeller's responsibilities will be focused in a number of areas, including the annual budget review process, the planning of academic building projects and coordination of the university's academic and cultural centers, including such units as the Eisenhower Library, the Johns Hopkins University Press, the Institute for Policy Studies and the Institute for the Academic Advancement of Youth.

James Zeller will assume his post of associate provost for budgets and planning on Dec. 1.

"Jim Zeller has worked very effectively under two directors to ensure the financial stability of the Peabody Institute," Knapp said. "He also has played a key role in planning and managing important capital projects in and around the Peabody campus. He has earned the admiration of colleagues across the university, and I'm very pleased that he will now have an opportunity to use his wisdom and his considerable skills in the service of the university as a whole."

Zeller's appointment, effective Dec. 1, is made as part of a restructuring of responsibility within the Provost's Office coincident with Vice Provost Stephen M. McClain's assumption of a new role. For three years beginning Jan. 1, McClain will be the first full-time representative in Europe of the entire university. Based in Berlin, he will make new contacts for Johns Hopkins and find new opportunities for academic collaboration across Europe.

As associate dean at Peabody under directors Robert Pierce and Robert Sirota, Zeller has been responsible for strategic planning and for managing a $22 million annual budget and a $53 million endowment. He also has overseen human resources, information technology and other nonacademic areas.

"I'm excited about this opportunity and looking forward to working even more closely with so many people across the university whom I've enjoyed meeting over the years," Zeller said.
