SAIS to Host Conference on Corruption in Asia

The School of Advanced International Studies will host a conference, "Corruption in Asia: Fostering Integrity in Business and Government," from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Wed., April 19.

This conference will examine and critique some of the most recent efforts to create a more open, equitable and efficient global economy and community.

Business and government leaders as well as experts on corruption and Asia will share their views and ideas. Speakers will come from the private sector, Department of State, Department of Defense, Transparency International and the academic community as well as East and Southeast Asian countries.

Daniel Fung, the solicitor general of Hong Kong from 1994 to 1998, will be the keynote speaker, addressing the scope of corruption in Asia and the key players who can develop solutions to this problem.

Also planned are two panel discussions, "Fostering Transparency and Accountability in Business and Finance" and "Critical Links: National Security and Justice Systems." Rudy de Leon, deputy secretary of defense, has been invited to give the luncheon address.

The event, sponsored by the Southeast Asia Studies Program at SAIS and the GE Fund, will be held in the Kenney Auditorium of the Nitze Building. The conference is free and open to the public, but reservations are required. To register, contact 202-663-5837 or lweiss@mail.jhuwash.jhu.edu.
