SAIS and the Maxwell School Create Joint Degree Program

Johns Hopkins Gazette Online Edition

In mid-January, SAIS and Syracuse University's Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs established a joint degree program. The Maxwell School is the No. 1 public policy school in the country, according to U.S. News and World Report.

SAIS and Maxwell School students will be able to enroll in the M.A.-M.P.A. program beginning in the fall of 2000. To complete the degrees, they will be at SAIS for three semesters and at the Maxwell School for two semesters plus a summer session.

"This joint degree program grew out of a successful joint venture with the Maxwell School in the area of executive education," said Stephen Szabo, associate dean for academic affairs at SAIS, and Astrid Merget, Max-well School associate dean, in a joint statement. "We discovered that the schools had a set of shared values, including a multidisciplinary orientation, a synergy of theory and practice and a commitment to public values, especially those of democratic governance."

SAIS students will benefit from courses offered by the Maxwell School in public and nonprofit management, technology and information management, environmental policy and administration, and international and development administration. As for the benefit to Maxwell School students, Merget said, "This now allows us to globalize our program."

Szabo added: "The new program allows SAIS to offer those students interested in the public and nonprofit sectors a program equal in caliber to our Wharton joint [M.A.-M.B.A.] degree. In doing so, it strengthens our commitment to public service."

The new program becomes the fifth formalized joint degree program at SAIS.
