For The Record:
New Structure For Administration Of JHM Research And Education

Johns Hopkins Gazette Online Edition

With the departure last year of Bart Chernow, vice dean for research and technology, and Cathy DeAngelis, vice dean for academic affairs and faculty, Edward Miller, dean of the School of Medicine and CEO of JHM, has decided to restructure the positions administering the key areas of research and education for Johns Hopkins Medicine. Working with JHM Executive Vice Dean Elias Zerhouni, Miller made the following appointments:

Chi Dang has been named vice dean for research in the new Division of Research Affairs. A professor of medicine, oncology and pathology, Dang is director of the Division of Hematology and deputy director for research in the Department of Medicine. His new division will encompass the Office of Research Administration, the JCCI, the Animal Use and Care Committee and issues related to research integrity, compliance, space planning and core facilities.

Scott Sherman, who has served as assistant dean and director of corporate liaison, has been named assistant dean for business development. His new Division of Business Development will include the offices of Technology Licensing, Corporate Liaison and Consumer Health Information, and the Office of the Advisory Committee on Conflict of Interest, plus new initiatives to foster closer ties with industry and regional economic development.

The appointment of Nina Ossana as director of the Office of Technology Licensing was announced earlier.

William Tew is the new executive director of licensing and business development. Tew was a full-time faculty member in the Department of Biological Chemistry during the 1970s. In 1980, while remaining on the part-time faculty, he founded Chesapeake Biological Laboratories. When he retired as CBL chairman in 1999, the company was internationally recognized as a leader in the sterile processing of sensitive, biologically derived pharmaceuticals. Over the past six months, Tew has volunteered as a consultant to the School of Medicine on technology licensing.

As the new vice dean for faculty affairs, Janice Clements, a professor of comparative medicine and neurology, will be responsible for faculty issues related to promotions, policies and disputes, as well as the Office of Part-Time Faculty Programs. Currently director of the Retrovirus Laboratory and interim director of the Division of Comparative Medicine, Clements has participated actively on numerous faculty committees and has been a course leader and mentor for M.D./Ph.D. and Ph.D. students.

David Nichols, the new vice dean for education, will head the offices of Admissions, Registrar, Student Affairs, Graduate Students, Postdoctoral Programs, Continuing Medical Education and the Welch Medical Library. A professor of anesthesiology and critical care medicine with a secondary appointment in pediatrics, Nichols is director of both the pediatric intensive care unit and pediatric anesthesia. He has led a host of educational efforts and has won the Outstanding Teacher and Best Medical Student Teaching awards in the Department of Anesthesiology/Critical Care Medicine.
