Experience Corps Grads Off To Elementary Schools

Johns Hopkins Gazette Online Edition

Linda Fried, professor of medicine in the School of Medicine and director of Experience Corps, looked on as Ida Mae Johnson received congratulations and a diploma from Baltimore City Schools Superintendent Robert Booker during last Wednesday's graduation luncheon for new recruits.

Johnson, one of 19 graduates, will report to Abbotston Elementary School, where she will work with other Experience Corps members in literacy, library and violence-prevention programs. This is the second class of senior citizens to finish training in a study that examines the effects of senior volunteerism in elementary schools. The program now has more than 40 fully trained members working in three elementary schools in the Greater Homewood area. The effort is a collaboration of Hopkins' Center of Aging and Health and Center for Social Organization of Schools, and the Greater Homewood Community Corporation.
