Digging in at Homewood

Johns Hopkins Gazette Online Edition

Deans and high-ranking administrators enjoyed a break from the massive academic regalia they wore at commencement a day earlier to get down and dirty in T-shirts and jeans on May 26. The event was the "Bring Your Own Shovel" groundbreaking ceremony for Great Excavations, the ambitious construction project that implements much of the open space portion of the new Homewood campus master plan. Landscaping work officially began Tuesday, May 30, with the digging up of asphalt in the lower quad.

Digging in, photo above, are Gary Ostrander, associate dean for research in the School of Arts and Sciences; Engineering dean Ilene Busch-Vishniac; Adam Gross of Ayers/Saint/Gross, designers of the master plan; and James McGill, senior vice president for finance and administration.

In the photo above are SPSBE dean Ralph Fessler; Steven Knapp, provost and senior vice president for academic affairs; and Estelle Fishbein, vice president and general counsel.
