Bone Marrow Donations -- "Type for Life," co-sponsored by the schools of Medicine, Nursing and Public Health and the National Marrow Donor Program, is the first student-run tissue typing drive.

The National Marrow Donor Program maintains a registry to match patients and volunteers with compatible tissue types. Minority volunteers are especially needed to help diversify the registry.

Getting typed requires only a small blood draw and should take only 5 to 10 minutes. Interested individuals can get typed at one of the following locations on the indicated dates:

Fifth Annual 1.5-Mile Walk-a-Thon -- The Maryland SPCA is sponsoring its annual 1.5-mile walk-a-thon, "March for the Animals," on Sun., March 26, at the Homewood campus, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Participants will walk with their pets. There will be games, prizes, food and entertainment, as well as demonstrations by the Baltimore City Police Canine Unit. The event will take place rain or shine.

Family, friends and co-workers can sponsor walkers and their pets (the suggested pledge is at least $5). Bring collected pledges to the event. All owners will be required to clean up after their dogs; baggies will be provided. Dogs participating in the walk must have current vaccination and must be leashed and under control at all times. No female dogs in heat will be allowed to participate. Watering stations will provide refreshments for walkers and dogs along the 1.5-mile course.

Hurt and Used Book Solicitation -- The Johns Hopkins University Press staff development fund is currently accepting donations of used and unwanted books for its Hurt and Used Book Sale, scheduled for April 25 and 26. The fund wants both hardbound and paperback books, fiction or nonfiction.

Books can be dropped off between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, at 2715 N. Charles St. The last day for donations is April 21.

Provost's Undergraduate Research Awards -- The 2000 Provost's Undergraduate Research Awards will provide a number of grants to current freshmen, sophomores and juniors in the schools of Arts and Sciences, Engineering and Nursing, and in the Peabody Conservatory and School of Medicine.

The money may be used to pay the costs of the winner's research or creative projects. Winners may choose to receive up to $1,500 of the total award as a cash stipend or to receive academic credit for their work.
