NEAR asteroid flyover movie available on the Web

Showing you don't need lasers and light sabers to make a great space flick, the Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous mission team has released the first movie from NEAR Shoemaker's Oct. 26 low-altitude flyover of the asteroid Eros. The satellite on that occasion was lowered to about 3 miles from Eros' surface, the closest any spacecraft has ever come to a planetary body without landing on it.

The 90-second movie is available in animated GIF, QuickTime and MPEG formats. To view the movie, and for NEAR's latest images, go to http://near.jhuapl.edu.

Documentary films with local flavor to be shown at JHU

Two short documentary films produced by Hopkins' own Lillian Bowers will be screened at noon on Tuesday, Dec. 5, in the Garrett Room of the Milton S. Eisenhower Library.

Bowers, a library assistant in the Cataloging Department at MSEL, was executive producer and co-director of Not a Lady Among Us!, a film completed this year that chronicles the history of the Women's Industrial Exchange on Charles Street. Also to be shown is Little Castles, Bowers' award-winning 1998 documentary on Baltimore's famous facade material, Formstone.

Not a Lady Among Us!, co-directed by Matt Pittroff and produced by the TruckStop Motion Picture Company, premiered Nov. 2 at the Senator Theatre. The two films, each of them less than 30 minutes in length, were co-produced by the Formstone Foundation.

The event is free and open to the university community. Donations will be accepted at the screening for Children in Common, a Russian orphanage for disabled children that Bowers supports.
