Flu Vaccines -- Flu vaccines will be offered free to faculty and staff of the Homewood campus during the week of Oct. 24, in the Great Hall at Levering. The schedule is as follows:

  • Tues., Oct. 24, 9 a.m. to noon

  • Wed., Oct. 25, 7 to 10 a.m.

  • Thurs., Oct. 26, 9 a.m. to noon

  • Fri., Oct. 27, 9 a.m. to noon (Garrett Room, Milton S. Eisenhower Library)

  • Mon., Oct. 30, 9 a.m. to noon

  • Vaccines will also be administered on the above dates in the office of Occupational Health Services, W-601 Wyman Park Bldg., from 2 to 4 p.m. Flu vaccines will also be offered on the East Baltimore campus. For times and location, call 410-955-6211.

    Peabody Conservatory Blood Drive -- The Peabody Conservatory has scheduled a blood drive for Mon., Oct. 30, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Unger Lounge. To schedule an appointment to donate blood, call 410-659-8178 or e-mail bbkey@peabody.jhu.edu.


    Butterball Turkey Program -- Provide Thanksgiving dinners to families in need by participating in the Butterball Turkey Program. Donations of $15 will purchase a Butterball gift certificate to help a needy family buy a turkey or other food items for the holiday.

    Adopt-a-Family/Agency Program -- Participate in the Adopt-a-Family Program/Agency Program by providing gifts, clothing and food to a family or agency in need.

    The program operates in conjunction with the Baltimore City Department of Social Services and various nonprofit health and human welfare agencies in Central Maryland. For information, call Eden Blum at 410-516-0345 or e-mail eblum@jhu.edu.


    The Singleton Travel Graduate Fellowship -- Applications are being accepted for two travel fellowships of $2,500 each, reserved for Johns Hopkins graduate students who need to be in Italy to work on their research. The funds are intended to cover round-trip airfare and travel within Italy.

    Applicants must submit a CV, a description of their project and a letter of support by a Johns Hopkins faculty member familiar with their work. Applicants should demonstrate that the successful completion of their projects would require the use of Italian literary sources.     Pilot Project Applications -- The Johns Hopkins NIEHS Center in Urban Environmental Health is now accepting pilot project applications. Projects will be funded for up to $15,000 for the period beginning April 1, 2001, to March 31, 2002. The deadline for submissions is Dec. 18, 2000.

    Request for Proposals in Statistics Research -- The Acheson J. Duncan Fund for the Advancement of Research in Statistics requests proposals for small grants to support research projects in statistics, probability and stochastic processes.

    Hopkins faculty and students are eligible to apply for funding for collaborative projects with a member of the faculty in the Department of Mathematical Sciences. Items funded might include, but are not limited to, travel to research conferences and workshops, computer equipment and software, matching funds for grant proposals, short-term visits of collaborators to Hopkins, interdepartmental seminars, partial support for research assistants and seed money for new research. Most grants will be smaller than $5,000.

    Proposals should be brief, preferably no more than three single-sided pages, provide itemized expense estimates and be signed by each investigator. Proposals may be submitted to the committee chair, John C. Wierman, 104 Whitehead Hall on the Homewood campus, at any time.


    CPR Classes -- "Heart Saver" CPR classes are being offered to JHU faculty and staff. The classes will be held once a month beginning in November, from 1:30 to 4 p.m., on the Homewood campus. Class sizes are limited.

    Falun Dafa -- A poster session, video presentation and question-and-answer session on the Chinese practice of falun dafa have been scheduled for Oct. 28, from 2 to 5 p.m. in the Garrett Room of the Milton S. Eisenhower Library.

    Stuttering Workshop -- Children 8 to 13 years old who stutter, and their parents, are invited to a workshop to learn about stuttering. The workshop will include interactive games and fun for students as well as sessions for parents to learn and discuss a wide variety of issues about stuttering.

    The workshop will be held Sun., Oct. 29, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Timonium Graduate Center of Loyola College, on Greenspring Drive.

    Part-time Graduate Program Open Houses -- The Krieger School of Arts and Sciences will have open houses for the Part-time Graduate Programs offered in Washington, D.C., Rockville, Md. and Baltimore. Attendees will meet faculty and staff and learn about the master's degree programs in applied economics, biotechnology, developmental psychology, environmental sciences, government, liberal arts and writing.
