Sociology and Math Sciences Create Joint Graduate Program

Johns Hopkins Gazette Online Edition

A new joint program leading to a doctorate in sociology and a master's degree in mathematical sciences has been created by the Krieger School's Sociology Department and the Whiting School's Mathematical Sciences Department.

"While mathematics plays a central role in the physical sciences and engineering, it is of growing importance in the social sciences. This program offers future doctors of sociology the opportunity to learn advanced statistics and their applications to sociological phenomena," said the departments' two chairs, Andrew Cherlin of Sociology and Edward Scheinerman of Mathematical Sciences, in a statement announcing the program. "With the sociological perspective to frame the research questions, the research designs to address them and the statistical skills to generate answers, graduates of this program will be uniquely qualified to understand and confront society's most vexing problems."

Interested students should apply to Sociology's doctoral program and indicate their desire to be part of this joint program. For more information about the two departments, go to their Web sites at http://www.soc.jhu.edu and http://www.mts.jhu.edu.
