Students, faculty, staff members and friends of the university gathered Oct. 12 on Garland Field to dedicate the Homewood campus's newest building, Clark Hall. The three-story red brick structure will greatly expand biomedical engineering teaching and research opportunities at Homewood, in addition to those offered at Johns Hopkins medical campus.

A highlight of the event occurred when students strung a huge ribbon across the front of the building. The ribbon was cut with giant shears to mark the official opening of Clark Hall. Speakers at the dedication included President Willam R. Brody; Ilene Busch-Vishniac, dean of the Whiting School of Engineering; Murray Sachs, director of the Department of Biomedical Engineering and the Whitaker Biomedical Engineering Institute; and Tara Johnson, a senior majoring in biomedical engineering.

The ceremony also recognized three major donors: G. Burtt Holmes, chairman of the Whitaker Foundation, which provided a $17 million grant to support construction and the hiring of new faculty; A. James Clark, chairman and CEO of Clark Enterprises, who donated $10 million toward construction of the building; and the state of Maryland, which provided a $3 million capital grant to support construction. The building was named in honor of Clark, who is a university trustee emeritus.
