'U.S. News' Guide: Hopkins One of Top Two Med Schools for 11th Year

For the 11th consecutive year, the School of Medicine has been ranked one of the top two medical schools in the nation, according to the 2002 U.S. News & World Report Best Graduate Schools Guide, on newsstands today. Of the nation's 125 accredited medical schools, only Harvard outscored Hopkins, coming in No. 1 with an overall score of 100. Hopkins was a close second with a score of 94, up dramatically from 73 points last year.

Hopkins also moved up significantly in specialty programs ranked by medical school deans and senior faculty. This year the university was ranked No. 1 in pediatrics, up from third last year, and tied with Harvard for No. 1 in internal medicine, up from second last year. Geriatrics also moved up, to No. 2 from 3, and AIDS was tied at No. 2, up from 3, as was drug/alcohol abuse, up from 4 last year. Women's health rose two spots to No. 3.

The School of Engineering was ranked at 27 this year, with bioengineering/biomedical in the No. 1 spot and environmental/environmental health at 6.

In the top 25 in the humanities and social sciences were economics, tied at 24 with Maryland; English, tied at 8 with Columbia; history, tied at 10 with Cornell and Wisconsin; psychology, tied at 24 with Duke; and sociology, tied at 19 with Penn State.
