Employees Involved with United Way -- Are you currently volunteering or receiving services at a United Way agency, or know someone at Hopkins who is? If so, would you be willing to share some of this information with your colleagues so that many can better understand the importance of the United Way in our community? Local agencies including Baltimore Reads, the League for People with Disabilities and St. Jerome's Head Start are praiseworthy examples of your campaign contributions at work. To participate, contact Judy Peregoff at 410-516-6060 or jperegoff@jhu.edu.

Become a Child Passenger Safety Expert -- Many of the injuries and fatalities of children in vehicle crashes--which in 1999 included more than 1,000 children under the age of 11 in Maryland alone--could have been prevented if the children had been correctly restrained. To help lower the numbers, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has developed a four-day course for child passenger safety certification, which will be taught from Oct. 9 to 12 on the JHMI campus. Those certified will be qualified to teach families how to select and correctly install car seats. A nominal fee of $10 is charged for the training, which is co-sponsored by the Central Maryland Safe Communities Center, the Children's Safety Center and the Center for Injury Research and Policy. To participate or for more information, call 410-614-5555.
