President Brody to Address University Community on Commemoration Day

On Commemoration Day, Feb. 22, President William R. Brody will take the opportunity to look at the past and future of Johns Hopkins as he addresses the university community on the occasion of the 125th anniversary of the university's founding.

Brody's 125th Anniversary Address is scheduled for 4 p.m. in Shriver Hall, Homewood campus, and will be followed by a reception in the Glass Pavilion. Parking arrangements are being made for those arriving from other campuses.

In his talk, Brody will examine the forces transforming the nature of higher education and how they will shape the mission of this and other universities.

This Month's Events

Sunday, Feb. 18. 7 p.m. "Swingin' into the 125th! A Johns Hopkins University 125th Anniversary Celebration Event." Paul Cosentino & the Boilermaker Jazz Band and George Gee's Jump, Jive & Wailers, with expert swing dance instruction during intermission by the fabulous Grit Grinders Swing Dance Team. Admission: $5. White Athletic Center, Homewood. Office of Special Events.

Wednesday, Feb. 21. Times and details TBA. 125th anniversary parties for JHU students at all Hopkins campuses.

Thursday, Feb. 22. 4 p.m. Commemoration Day: An address by President William R. Brody on the 125th anniversary of the university (see story at left). Shriver Hall, with reception to follow in the Glass Pavilion, Homewood campus. Office of Special Events.

125 Ways of Caring: As part of its anniversary celebration, the university is asking each of the 40,000 faculty and staff members to spend a day volunteering in a community project. Heart health is the theme for February's 125 Ways of Caring events. A sampling of ongoing activities follows. Through June. Renovation of 841 N. Washington St., a boarded vacant house in East Baltimore, for a new homeowner. School of Medicine Facilities Management.

Through May. Dunbar/Hopkins Health Partnership. This school-to-career program broadens and advances students' interest in health care-delivery professions, trends, opportunities and challenges, and provides work-based learning experiences that will stimulate further study at the college level. Volunteers needed to provide work experiences for students. University Administration.

Through May. Sandwich Sundays. For 11 Sundays this year, the JHU Interfaith Council in collaboration with the university chaplain is making lunches for the walk-in clients at HERO (Health Education Resource Center) on Maryland Avenue. These lunches are made on Sunday afternoons and distributed on the Monday morning. The goal each Sunday is to make 125 lovingly packed, nutritious lunches for those struggling with HIV and AIDS in Baltimore. Student volunteers representing the varying families of faith are needed. Campus Ministries and Homewood Student Affairs.

Year-round. MEDBANK of Maryland Inc. Founded by Robert McEwan, of the Comprehensive Transplant Center, and funded by a grant from the Maryland Health Care Foundation, MEDBANK provides free medications to low-income, underinsured, chronically ill patients. The program is currently available to any patient in Baltimore City or County or discharged from a hospital here. It covers all diseases and most medications. The work is performed at 7400 York Rd. by volunteers. The Johns Hopkins Hospital.
