LAX season is coming--free tix are ready for faculty, staff

The countdown begins to March 10, when the Blue Jays face off against Hofstra in the first home game of the 2001 lacrosse season. Other teams visiting Homewood Field this year are Virginia, Villanova, Ohio State, Navy and Loyola.

Faculty and staff can receive two complimentary season's passes by bringing a valid university I.D. to the main office in the Athletic Center between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday to Friday. Supply is limited and tickets must be picked up by March 9. Full-time students get free admission by showing their JCards at the gate.

Homewood campus to host colloquium on civil society

A daylong colloquium on the growing field of civil society will be held on Friday, Feb. 23, at the Homewood campus.

The event will bring together an array of Hopkins researchers, faculty, staff and students to look at what civil society is, what its institutions and manifestations are and what research in this area is being done at the university.

The Johns Hopkins All-University Colloquium on Civil Society will feature presentations from at least a dozen faculty, including Lester Salamon, director of the Hopkins Center for Civil Society Studies; Ali Khan, professor of economics; Matthew Crenson, political scientist; Ronald Walters, professor of history; and Laura Morlock, professor of health policy and management.

The program is open to interested faculty, staff and students and lunch will be served. Space is limited, so to reserve a place call 410-516-5389.


Center for Livable Future sets conference on dietary protein

Dietary Protein: Options for the Future" will be the subject of an all-day conference planned for Feb. 20 by the Center for a Livable Future.

Hopkins faculty participating are Robert S. Lawrence, whose topic is "Food Security, Food Production, Health and Environment"; Sidney W. Mintz, "Food Patterns in Agrarian Societies"; Lawrence J. Appel, "Protein and Cardiovascular Health"; and Christine Dubois, "The Case History of Soy and Soy Protein Products in the U.S.A." There will also be four visiting speakers.

The event will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Anna Baetjer Room, School of Public Health. Pre-registration is required; call 410-502-7578 or write to clf@jhsph.edu.


APL's asteroid mission NEAR ends with live video stream

The APL-managed Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous space mission wraps up Feb. 12 with the NEAR Shoemaker spacecraft's controlled descent to the surface of 433 Eros--the first-ever landing on an asteroid.

NASA will be providing a video stream of the descent day activities on Feb. 12 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. The post-mission briefing will be shown at 1 p.m. on Feb. 14. To view the streams, click on the "NASA Webcasts" button on NASA's home page at http://www.nasa.gov.

During the last three miles of its descent the satellite will beam close-up images of Eros back to Earth, at resolutions up to 10 times greater than seen so far.


Fencing team's van involved in car accident on I-83

On Feb. 4 at 9 p.m., the fencing team, traveling back to campus from a competition, was involved in an automobile accident on I-83. Three students and the coach were injured.

The Athletic Center van struck the rear of a Dodge sedan that had suddenly cut in front of it. State police said the sedan's driver, a 48-year-old woman, had slowed to make an illegal U-turn. The sedan's passenger, the driver's 70-year-old mother, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A graduate student and two undergraduates were transported by ambulance to Greater Baltimore Medical Center, treated and then released. The coach declined medical attention.


Parking notice for East Baltimore's Rutland Garage

In preparation for repairs, engineers will be performing structural surveys in East Baltimore's Rutland Garage from 7:30 p.m. to 4 a.m on Feb. 12, Feb. 13 and Feb. 15. To accommodate their need to access the parking decks, the JHMI Parking Operations Office is requesting that all base access parkers use the Broadway or McElderry garages during those times.

Rutland Garage monthly permit holders may continue to park in the facility, but are asked to move their vehicles from the levels on which work is scheduled prior to 7:30 p.m. The work schedule is Feb. 12, levels 6 and 7; Feb. 13, levels 3, 4 and 5; and Feb. 15, levels G, 1 and 2.
