Health Awareness Day -- A "Health Awareness Day" for JHU faculty and staff is scheduled for Wednesday, June 13, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Glass Pavilion on the Homewood campus. The event is sponsored by the Office of Benefits Administration and presented by Occupational Health Services. Request for Proposals for Interdisciplinary Work -- The Center for a Livable Future will support new, visionary work by Johns Hopkins University faculty, fellows or students that focuses on how to achieve a livable future--using resources equitably and sustainably, improving health for all, and leaving a world fit for future generations. The center's goal is to promote interdisciplinary research and synthesis that addresses the complex interactions among diet and consumption, health, food production and food security, equity, the environment and the world's resources. The funds are targeted primarily for collaborative projects. Eight to 10 awards of $10,000 to $20,000 will be granted for one year of support. The deadline for applications is July 15. Conference on Nursing -- "Outcomes Research: Why Do It?" is the theme of the annual Johns Hopkins Nurses' Alumni Association education program to be held Friday, June 8, from 8:15 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Renaissance Inner Harbor Hotel. The conference will focus on how outcomes research contributes to evidence-based nursing practice. The featured speakers are Marie Nolan, nurse researcher for nursing administration at The Johns Hopkins Hospital; Peggy Parks, psychologist and health insurance specialist with Health Care Financing Administration; Brenda Shelton, critical care clinical nurse specialist, Johns Hopkins Oncology Center; and Mary Beachley, president, Maryland Nurses Association. Cost for the day is $70, $60 for Hopkins School of Nursing alumni, $30 for students and $20 for Hopkins School of Nursing students. New York Business Tour -- The JHU Delta Sigma Pi fraternity and the MBA Association are sponsoring a tour to several businesses in New York City. Participants will tour the New York Stock Exchange, NBC Studios and Rockefeller Center. The event is open to everyone, but seats are limited. The trip is scheduled for Friday, June 15, from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Cost is $50. Summer Youth Employment Program -- The university is teaming up with the Futures Program in Baltimore City and the Mayor's Office of Employment Development to increase the chances of Baltimore city high school students staying in school. The career exploration program will run from Monday, July 2, through Friday, Aug. 3. The students will work a 30-hour week and will be paid minimum wage by the Office of Employment Development. By providing quality experiences, a chance to perform learning-rich assignments and to acquire or practice workplace know-how, it is hoped that the youth will be motivated to meet academic expectations, earn a high school diploma and enter meaningful employment or further schooling.
