Remembering Rex

Johns Hopkins Gazette Online Edition

On Saturday, Nov. 23, friends and family of Rex Chao gathered on the south side of Homewood's Mattin Center to unveil a statue dedicated to the 19-year-old political science major, who was shot and killed by a fellow student in 1996. To honor Chao, who played in the Hopkins Symphony Orchestra, former girlfriend Suzanne Hubbard and friend AmyClair Brusch chaired a committee to raise more than $70,000 to commission a bronze sculpture of a young man with a violin. 'Spirit of Music' is the work of Jud Hartmann, who also sculpted the Native American lacrosse players that stand by the Lacrosse Museum adjacent to Homewood Field.
