WJHU becomes WYPR

Johns Hopkins Gazette Online Edition

At a celebration at the Johns Hopkins Club on Jan. 31, President William R. Brody presented the keys to WJHU-FM to Tony Brandon, president of Your Public Radio Corp., the community-based nonprofit that purchased the station from the university that day. The station changed its call letters to WYPR.

Brody told Brandon and talk show host Marc Steiner, the driving force behind the community effort to buy the station, that the university had found in YPR Corp. "the right organization to take public radio in Baltimore to the next level of achievement." WYPR, he said, plans "continued great programming, a sharper regional focus, locally produced shows and a transition into digital broadcasting with greater use of interactive technology."

Brody also said that the university will help the new ownership get off the ground with a commitment of $50,000 in underwriting support. He urged the station's listeners and the Baltimore business community to continue to back the station.
