Rec Center Closed -- The O'Connor Recreation Center will be closed from Aug. 25 to Sept. 2.


Mentors Needed -- The Take Charge! Youth Violence Prevention Project needs mentors to keep children safe and free from injury through mentoring and community resource linkages.

Each mentor will be trained in a violence prevention curriculum and will meet with each youth at least six times. A stipend of $240 will be given to each mentor upon completion of the project. Male mentors are especially needed.

Summer Basketball League -- Some of the city's best basketball players will compete during this year's Craig Cromwell Summer Basketball League, co-sponsored by Johns Hopkins Medicine.

Teenage athletes 14 to 18 compete throughout August in a basketball league that encourages physical fitness during the summer months. There are both boy's and girl's divisions.

All games are played at the Madison Square Recreation Center located at 1401 E. Biddle St. For more information, call Ellen Brown of JHHS Community Services at 410-614-2430.


Volunteer Nurses Needed -- The JHHS Office of Community Health needs volunteer nurses to provide first-aid during a community exercise program one or two evenings per week.

Muscle Toning and Conditioning -- Beginning August 8, the Office of Benefits Administration is offering a muscle conditioning and toning class for faculty and staff.

The class is being held Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 12:15 to 1 p.m. on the Homewood campus. Cost for the eight-week session is $20 (once a week) or $40 (twice a week).
