University Supply Stores will exit office supply business

As a result of Hopkins' Select Vendor agreement with Office Depot, the University Supply Stores will no longer stock office supplies, effective July 1.

Departments are encouraged to use Office Depot as their primary source of office supplies. To place an order, the Purchasing Office recommends using a JHU Procurement Card and Office Depot's online ordering system at bsdnet.officedepot.com.

The University Supply Stores, which are located in Homewood's Mudd Hall and the School of Medicine's Preclinical Teaching Building, will continue to bulk-purchase laboratory supplies--such as test tubes, centrifuges and chemicals--for resale to university departments.

In January 2001, the university signed an agreement with Office Depot to provide commonly used office supplies to all Hopkins-affiliated entities at significantly reduced prices. The supplier offers next-day "desktop" delivery. For more information, contact Darlene Foehrkolb at 410-516-8383.

Peabody Library announces change in access for users

Because of the ongoing renovation project at the Peabody Institute, the George Peabody Library is currently open by appointment only. This policy is likely to remain in effect until September 2003.

JHM targets business execs with a monthly e-newsletter

Johns Hopkins Medicine has started a monthly e-newsletter targeted to local business executives. Hopkins Medicine e-News provides a roundup of brief reports that fall under three headings: the business of medicine, science and medical news, and commentary.

Designed for those on the go, the newsletter lists headlines and brief summaries, each of which has a link to a full story. It also features links to the latest issue of Hopkins Medicine, the monthly online magazine; and Top of the News, which leads to Health News Feed and other Hopkins information.

JHU alumni magazine garners two more CASE awards

In the CASE (Council for Advancement and Support of Education) Circle of Excellence Awards Program, Johns Hopkins Magazine has received a grand gold medal in the Best Articles of the Year category for its February 2002 cover story, "Trials and Tribulation." The special report addressed how the death of a healthy research volunteer forced the university to confront tough questions about ensuring patient safety in clinical research trials.

The magazine also was awarded a silver medal in the Higher Education Reporting category for a package of five stories from throughout the past year, including "Trials and Tribulation."

Last month the publication received a CASE gold medal for staff writing and a bronze medal in the general interest magazine category.

A Hopkins team of one at women's track and field event

Kathy Darling, a Hopkins junior majoring in civil engineering, finished second in both the discus and javelin at the NCAA women's Division III track and field championships, held last month. Darling's performance made her, by herself, the 16th best track and field team in Division III.

Darling's discus throw of 157 feet 6 inches broke the previous Centennial Conference record.
