Bloomberg School of Public Health

Jeannine Baker, director of financial aid, has been selected to serve on the scholarship section committee for the Maryland Hospital Association.

Ellen K. Silbergeld has been promoted to professor in the Department of Environmental Health Sciences.

Health Divisions Administration

Jessica Collins has joined the Children's Center Office of Communications and Public Affairs as senior media relations representative. Collins previously served as media relations officer at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston; an account executive at Clarke & Company, a full-service public relations and strategic communications firm in Boston; and public relations coordinator for In Style Magazine in New York. She graduated cum laude from Boston University with a bachelor of science degree in journalism.

Homewood Student Affairs

Joy Dunbar has joined the Registrar's Office as assistant registrar for information systems and institutional research. Dunbar has been a member of the mathematics faculty of Emory & Henry College in Emory, Va., and also has served as the registrar of that institution. Most recently she was director of institutional research and computer literacy at Emory & Henry, where she had received her bachelor's degree. She holds a master of arts in education from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and has done additional course work in mathematics and computer applications both there and at the University of Virginia.

Johns Hopkins Health System

Cleon W. Goodwin Jr. has been named director of the Baltimore Regional Burn Center and chief of the Division of Surgical Critical Care Sciences at Bayview. A professor of surgery at the School of Medicine, Goodwin is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and previously was commander and director of the U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research in Texas and a clinical professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. He is past president of the American Burn Association and past president of the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma.

Krieger School of Arts and Sciences

Amanda Anderson has been appointed the Caroline Donovan Professor in the Department of English.

William Kotti has been appointed associate dean for resource planning and development. Kotti joined the Krieger School Office of Development and Alumni Relations in April 2001, serving first as director of development and most recently as interim associate dean. Kotti came to Hopkins from the University of South Carolina, where he earned a bachelor's degree in political science and a master's in public administration, and then worked as director of development for the College of Liberal Arts and in planned giving/major gifts.

Glenn Marcus, a lecturer in the Communications in Contemporary Society program in Washington, was part of the team that created the documentary "Korean War Stories" that won an Emmy on Sept. 10. The one-hour film aired on PBS in the spring.

Multidisciplinary

James A. Callahan Jr. has been appointed senior director of leasing and asset management in the Office of Johns Hopkins Real Estate, which serves both the university and health system. He was formerly vice president of sales and leasing for Constellation Real Estate Inc., a BGE subsidiary based in Columbia, Md. Callahan will oversee leasing activities and asset management, as well as acquisitions and dispositions.

School of Medicine

Peter B. Barker has been promoted to professor of medicine.

Roy G. Bower has been promoted to professor of medicine.

David S. Friedman, assistant professor of ophthalmology, has been named a Jahnigen Career Development Scholar by the American Geriatrics Society/Hartford Foundation. The $200,000 award encourages young physicians and surgeons to become interested in geriatrics aspects of their discipline. Friedman's study will assess whether vision restoration in assisted-living residents prevents further decline in health.

John D. Gottsch has been named the inaugural recipient of the newly established Margaret C. Mosher Professorship in Ophthalmology.

David S. Hungerford has been appointed to the David Hungerford Professorship in Orthopaedic Surgery.

Richard Huganir, professor of neuroscience and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator, has been chosen treasurer-elect of the Society of Neuroscience, a nonprofit membership organization for basic scientists and physicians who study the brain and nervous system. Huganir assumes the position at the society's annual meeting in November.

Patricia D. Hurn has been promoted to professor of anesthesiology/critical care medicine.

Stanley A. Klatsky, an associate professor of plastic surgery and director of cosmetic surgery at Hopkins Hospital, has been awarded the distinguished service award by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. The award has been given only eight times in the society's 35-year history. Klatsky founded the Cosmetic Surgery Clinic at Hopkins, the first major academic medical center to recognize cosmetic surgery as a specialty within plastic surgery.

Susan Michaelis has been promoted to professor of cell biology.

Lloyd P. Minor has been appointed to the John E. Bordley Professorship in Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery.

Allesandro Olivi has been promoted to professor of neurosurgery with a secondary appointment in oncology.

Richard L. Wahl has been appointed as professor of radiology and named the Henry N. Wagner Jr. M.D. Professor in Nuclear Medicine.

School of Nursing

Laura Talbot, an assistant professor, was presented with a Meritorious Service Medal at recent Pentagon ceremonies. Talbot, a colonel in the United States Air Force Reserve, was recognized for her quick response following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Upon hearing of the attacks, she traveled to Bolling Air Force Base in Washington and coordinated military assistance to New York City, such as military transport of medical personnel, blood and supplies.

School of Professional Studies in Business and Education

Laurence A. Jarvik, an instructor in the Department of Managerial Communications' MBA program, has been awarded a Fulbright Scholar grant to lecture on journalism and mass media at the State University of World Languages in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, during the 2002-2003 academic year.

University Administration

Human Resources' Career Management Program has received the 2002 Award for Outstanding Employer Career Development Program in Education from the Maryland Career Development Association. The organization's mission is to promote awareness of the need for lifelong career development by increasing public knowledge of career issues and services and supporting the development of workers.
