With the beckoning smells of onion-slathered sausages and gooey cheesesteaks wafting over the Homewood campus on Friday, who could possibly have wanted to stay indoors for lunch? The crisp spring weather and clear blue skies staged a perfect opening day for the student-run Spring Fair, an annual three-day event that typically draws 100,000 fun-seekers from nearby neighborhoods and beyond. Garland Field and the adjacent roadway were aburst in color as vendors sold an array of international foods, crafts, clothing and jewelry from their tented booths. Judging from the lines of people, favorite foods this year were Thai barbecue and funnel cakes. The parking lot was transformed into an amusement park, complete with a Ferris wheel, a carousel, pint-sized cars and planes that went round and round, and all kinds of motorized rides tossing their passengers every which way into the air.
