Score One for Mr. Taneyhill

Johns Hopkins Gazette Online Edition

He doesn't shoot, but he scores. Frank Taneyhill (aka Mr. Taneyhill), the amiable scorekeeper/clock operator for the Johns Hopkins men's and women's basketball teams for more than 25 years, was honored at halftime of the Centennial Conference Women's Basketball Championship game, held on March 1 at Homewood, for his steadfast service and support to the university's Athletic Department.

Nancy Funk, women's basketball coach; Frank Taneyhill; Bill Nelson, men's basketball coach; and Jordan Tobin, director of games operations and athletic faclities.

The head coaches and players of the two basketball teams presented Taneyhill with both an engraved crystal basketball and--to forever link him to the role with which he is synonymous--a brass plate to be permanently affixed to what will be known as "The Frank Taneyhill Scorer's Table."

Inscribed on it are the words Taneyhill utters to players and coaches before every home game: "I hope you win." Due to an illness during the second half of the basketball season, the former referee--who had never in his career missed a home game--took a leave of absence from his scorer's duties. He will, however, continue to work in Johns Hopkins sporting event ticket sales.
