Eastern campus's first blood drive scheduled for Thursday

To the campus locations where employees can donate blood to help alleviate the region's ongoing shortage, add one more: Johns Hopkins at Eastern. The first blood drive will be held there this week, from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 16, on the first floor. To schedule an appointment, call JoAnn Hans at 443-997-2221.

The next scheduled drive at Homewood will be Feb. 12 and 13, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the Glass Pavilion; to make an appointment go to www.jhu.edu/~outreach/blooddrive.

SAIS faculty members write about facets of leadership

The School of Advanced International Studies has recently released the 2002 issue of its annual publication, SAISphere. In the magazine, which is published for alumni and others, faculty members explore the many facets of leadership in the context of international relations.

Among the features are "Education for Leadership" by Eliot A. Cohen; "Preemptive Self-Defense: Worrying About the Bomb" by Ruth Wedgwood; "Karzai's Legitimacy as a Leader" by S. Frederick Starr; "War in the Middle East: The Dilemmas of American Leadership" by Camille Pecastaing; "Latin America's Leadership Crisis" by Riordan Roett; and "U.S. Business: Restoring Confidence in a Tarnished Global Leader" by Roger Leeds.

Pakistani ambassador to speak Wednesday at SAIS

Ashraf Jehangir Qazi, ambassador of Pakistan to the United States, will be the next speaker at the W.P. Carey Forum of the Central Asia-Caucasus Institute at SAIS. His talk is scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 15, at 5:30 p.m. and will be preceded by a reception at 5 p.m.

Qazi, who also has served as Pakistan's ambassador to the Russian Federation, the People's Republic of China and, most recently, India, will speak about "Pakistan, Afghanistan and the United States Since the Fall of the Taliban."
