Free Driver Training -- JHMI's Department of Health, Safety and Environment, in conjunction with the Safety Council of Maryland Inc. and Maryland's Department of Transportation, will conduct three safety seminars in 2003.

The first, "Fast and Fatal," is scheduled for Feb. 5, from noon to 1 p.m. in Hurd Hall. The seminar is open to all hospital and university employees.

Volunteer Tutors for Adults Wanted -- Opportunities to tutor adults in reading and writing, at a convenient location, are available through the Greater Homewood Adult Literacy Program.

Business Clothing Drive -- Gently used professional men's and women's clothing will be collected this week in several university locations. The clothing will be donated to women entering the job market through the YWCA's Job Training and Professional Development Programs and to formerly homeless men participating in Christopher Place Employment Academy. Clothing should be clean and in good condition. The drive is one of four organized each year by the Office of Faculty, Staff and Retiree Programs.

Applications Available for Provost's Undergraduate Research Awards -- The 2003 Provost's Undergraduate Research Awards will provide a number of grants to current freshmen, sophomores and juniors in the schools of Arts and Sciences, Engineering and Nursing, and in the Peabody Conservatory. The maximum amount of an award is $3,000. Proposals from all disciplines are appreciated and encouraged. Faculty sponsors must be full-time faculty but can be from any division of the university. Research (or Peabody projects) can take place at any division of JHU.

Howard Hughes Summer Research Fellowship Program -- The 2003 Howard Hughes Summer Research Fellowship Program will award $3,000 stipends to approximately 30 undergraduates in the schools of Arts and Sciences and Engineering to conduct laboratory research during the summer with a Hopkins faculty member of their choice.

The program, which includes seminars and social activities, will run from June 2 through Aug. 8. Students should submit applications and supporting materials--a letter of support from lab sponsor; letter of recommendation from a faculty member; transcript; statement of purpose; and proposal--to Ami Cox, 237 Mergenthaler, by 4 p.m., Feb. 14.
