Relay for Life Planned for April -- The 2003 University Relay for Life, an all-night team relay to raise money to fight cancer and increase cancer awareness, is scheduled for Friday night, April 25, through Saturday, April 26.

During the relay, which is organized cooperatively by several Baltimore area universities, team members will camp out and enjoy friends, food, music, educational activities and ceremonies to honor both cancer survivors and those who have lost their lives to the disease. In past years, many Johns Hopkins teams have worn costumes, created matching T-shirts or carried banners. The event features a ceremony at which participants light hundreds of luminaria to honor loved ones.

Individuals interested in forming or joining a team can contact one of the event's co-chairs: Kristen Kyriazis at kkyriaz1@jhu.edu or 410-516-3582, Ashlee Moskwa at Oopsie22@aol.com or 410-516-3030, or Ausia Iqbal at Ausia02@aol.com or 410-516-3690.

Volunteers Needed for Fort McHenry Spring Cleaning -- Hopkins faculty, staff, retirees and students and their families are invited to join a group of Baltimore area volunteers on Saturday, April 26, to refurbish Historic Fort McHenry. Originally scheduled for October 2002 but canceled because of heavy rain, the rescheduled project will kick off National Volunteer Week, April 27 through May 3.

The planned spring cleaning will focus on weeding and grouting sand-bedded brick walks throughout the Historic Fort and Outer Battery areas, weeding and removing debris from the Historic Boundary Fence, cleaning and painting park benches at Armistead Plaza and the picnic area, and cleaning up the beach area at the tidal wetlands. Children are welcome to participate with one-on-one adult supervision.

The university is participating in the project as a member of the Corporate Volunteer Council of Central Maryland, a coalition of businesses and organizations that promotes employee volunteerism to benefit the community. CVCCM generally plans two major volunteer projects per year, one in the spring and one in the fall.

Those interested in volunteering should contact Lesley Giles in the Office of Faculty, Staff and Retiree Programs at 410-516-0373 or lgiles2@jhu.edu by April 21.

Looking for Tutors -- The JHMI International Society is looking for volunteer English tutors. Interested individuals should call 410-955-3370.

Applications Available for Provost's Undergraduate Research Awards -- The 2003 Provost's Undergraduate Research Awards will provide a number of grants to current freshmen, sophomores and juniors in the schools of Arts and Sciences, Engineering and Nursing, and in the Peabody Conservatory.

The maximum amount of an award is $3,000. Proposals from all disciplines are appreciated and encouraged. Faculty sponsors must be full-time faculty but can be from any division of the university. Research (or Peabody projects) can take place at any division of JHU.
