Freshman engineering student Yevgeniy "Eugene" Semenov
watches hopefully as the spindly pasta-and-glue span he
built with two teammates holds up a set of weights during
the annual Spaghetti Bridge Competition, conducted last
week at the Mattin Center. The entry assembled by Semenov
and fellow freshmen David Pollicino, looking on at right,
and Abigail Robinson won the first prize of $100 by holding
up 132 pounds before collapsing. Seventeen teams
constructed bridges for the contest, which introduces
students to the principles of planning and executing an
engineering project.
