Volunteers Needed for State Fair

The Governor's Office on Service and Volunteerism is looking for volunteers on August 24 for the State Fair at the Timonium Fairgrounds. Volunteers usually get free admission and other incentives. To sign up, contact Josie Athman at the Governor's Office, 410-767-0983.

 

Wanted: Employees Involved With United Way Agencies

The Office of Faculty, Staff and Retiree Programs is soliciting help from university employees who currently volunteer or receive services at a United Way agency, or know someone at Johns Hopkins who does. As part of the information-gathering effort, participants will be asked to share their experiences so that their JHU colleagues can better understand the importance of the United Way in our community.

Back to School Donation Drive

The Black Faculty and Staff Association is in need of school supplies for a local elementary school. All kinds of items are needed; monetary donations will also be accepted. The deadline for donations is Aug. 18. For more information and drop-off locations, call Lori, at 410-614-5475.

 

Host Family Program

The Johns Hopkins Host Family Program is designed to welcome incoming Hopkins students to the Baltimore community and ease their adjustment to a new environment. The program, which depends on alumni, faculty, staff and friends of Johns Hopkins, is managed by the Office of Alumni Relations and the Baltimore Alumni Chapter's Host Family Committee.

Hosting a student provides opportunities for both the host family and student to meet and develop meaningful friendships. Participation is voluntary. The level of participation is up to the host and the student.

Volunteer Tutors Wanted

The Greater Homewood Literacy Program offers opportunities to tutor adults in reading and writing in a convenient location. Materials and training are provided, and hours are flexible to suit all schedules. For details, call 410-261-3524.

 

Health Classes

Benefits Administration, in conjunction with Occupational Health Services, is offering classes on the Homewood campus for JHU faculty and staff. Yoga classes will be held from noon to 1 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays beginning Sept. 8. Cost for the 10-week session is $30 or $50 (once or twice a week).

CPR/AED classes will be held at no cost to faculty and staff. For more information, visit www.jhu.edu/~ohsh.

Weight Watchers at Work will begin a 14-week session at noon on Tuesday, Sept. 23. Cost for the session is $148.

Certificate in Nonprofit Studies

The Institute for Policy Studies is accepting applications for its fall classes in the Certificate in Nonprofit Studies Program. This part-time program is designed to develop the knowledge and practical skills needed by nonprofit staff and volunteers to run a successful organization.
