Blood Donations Needed to Meet Local and War Needs -- The National American Red Cross has been alerted by the Department of Defense's Armed Services Blood Program Office that limited additional blood supplies are needed to supplement the military blood supply for handling casualties of war. ASBPO officials have requested limited shipments of red blood cells and fresh frozen plasma.

The Red Cross is encouraging donors throughout the region to schedule and keep appointments in the upcoming weeks to strengthen the local blood supply.

To donate blood on the Homewood campus between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 23, or Thursday, April 24, in Levering Hall's Glass Pavilion, go to www.jhu.edu/~outreach/blooddrive send an email to hmwd.blooddrive@jhu.edu or call 410-516-0138. Scheduling appointments allows the Red Cross to allocate adequate staff and helps the drives run more smoothly, but walk-in donors are welcome.

Potential donors should familiarize themselves with current eligibility guidelines, including travel guidelines, before signing up for an appointment. Guidelines can be found on the Web site, and American Red Cross staff members are available to answer specific questions at 1-800-GIVE-LIFE. Those who are not currently eligible to donate blood can still participate by volunteering at the drive. Volunteers are needed throughout the day, especially between 7:30 and 10 a.m.

Managing Photographs, Files and Other University Assets -- An effort is under way to help Johns Hopkins departments and offices have a way to manage photographs, slides and virtually any other type of asset that can be digitized. A pilot program comprising users from academic departments, libraries, administration and public affairs offices is now testing a Web-based system for storing, cataloging, sharing and teaching with a variety of important files, from photographs and reports to pdfs and spreadsheets.

Certificate in Nonprofit Studies -- The Johns Hopkins Institute for Policy Studies is now accepting applications for its fall 2003 classes in the Certificate in Nonprofit Studies Program. The part-time program is designed to develop and enhance the knowledge and practical skills needed by nonprofit staff and volunteers to run a successful organization. The certificate can be applied to a Hopkins MBA.
