Meatless Monday Campaign Kicks Off at School of Public Health

Johns Hopkins Gazette Online Edition

The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health has joined the Meatless Monday Campaign, a national nonprofit organization whose mission is to reduce consumption of saturated fat, found mainly in meat and high-fat dairy products. The organization's central theme is just say no to meat, for a day.

The School of Public Health will serve as the campaign's scientific adviser, an effort coordinated by the Center for a Livable Future. In addition, Johns Hopkins is promoting the campaign at the Wolfe Street Cafe, located on the ninth floor of the School of Public Health's Wolfe Street building, by featuring bulletin boards that contain healthy-eating literature and highlight the meatless foods on the cafe's daily menu. The campaign will come to Homewood campus dining halls in the fall.

To date, 28 schools of public health have joined in support of the Meatless Monday Campaign in advocating moderation and encouraging people to explore healthy dietary alternatives. According to Center for a Livable Future studies, the regular consumption of meat and high-fat dairy products increases the risk of chronic diseases, especially heart disease, stroke and some cancers, the leading causes of death in the United States.
