Teresa Heinz, a noted philanthropist, accepted the 2003 Albert Schweitzer Gold Medal for Humanitarianism last week in a ceremony in Shriver Hall on the Homewood campus. The award was presented by President William R. Brody and Lore Toepfer, whose late father, Alfred Toepfer, established the foundation that gives the Schweitzer award to recognize extraordinary achievement in humanitarianism.

Heinz, who is the wife of presidential candidate Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.), is chairman of the Heinz Family Philanthropies and the Heinz Endowments.

The award recognizes her efforts to protect the environment, to promote health care and education and to improve the lives of women and children around the world. For the text of Heinz's acceptance speech, go to webapps.jhu.edu/jhuniverse/today/schweitzer.cfm.
