CAAT Courses

The Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing at the Bloomberg School of Public Health is offering a new Web-based course, Enhancing Humane Science: Improving Animal Research, available at oac.med.jhmi.edu/humane_site.

Developed by CAAT, with James Owiny, training and compliance administrator of the JHU Animal Care and Use Committee, and Christian Newcomer, associate provost for animal research and resources, the course provides a broad overview of diverse topics in the practices of and approaches to humane animal experimentation.

Individuals completing the self-paced material are invited to join discussion groups led by faculty or invited guests and scheduled from noon to 1:30 p.m. at 615 N. Wolfe Street, BSPH Room W3030, on the following dates: Wednesday, Feb. 25; Wednesday, March 17; Wednesday, April 21; and Wednesday, May 12.

This course offers a certificate of participation. This is available by participating in the course, clicking on the certificate portion on the Web site and attending one of the discussion groups.

Homewood Blood Drives

In support of the work of the American Red Cross, Johns Hopkins has scheduled a blood drive from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 10, and Wednesday, Feb. 11, at the Glass Pavilion on the Homewood campus.

Walk-in donors are welcome throughout the day, but those with scheduled appointments will be given priority.

For more information on the Homewood campus blood drive, or to change or cancel a previously scheduled appointment, send e-mail to hmwd.blooddrive@jhu.edu or call 410-516-0138.

The complete schedules for Homewood, Eastern, East Baltimore, Peabody and APL are posted online at www.jhu.edu /outreach/blooddrive/schedule.html.

JHU Women's Network Outreach Campaign

For its spring Outreach Campaign, the JHU Women's Network is collecting donations to benefit the House of Ruth. The drive will take place April 19 to 30. The Women's Network is seeking volunteers to host boxes in their areas, with the hope of having at least one box in each building. To participate, contact Valerie Mazza at vmazza@jhmi.edu.

The Outreach Campaign held in October to benefit the Maryland Food Bank collected 1,554 pounds of food, a 50 percent increase over last year.

JHU Summer Day Sports Camp

Summer camp on the Homewood campus will begin its 38th year of operation on June 21. Operated primarily for the children of Hopkins faculty, staff, alumni and neighbors, the co-ed program is for children 5 through 13. This year, enrollment is being capped for the six sessions, and a 10 percent discount is being offered to JHU employees who send in deposits by March 1.

The directors will be swimming coach George Kennedy, men's basketball coach Bill Nelson and head baseball coach Robert Babb.

Due to construction on the JHU pool, there will be no swimming activities this year; however, the program will be using the new, air-conditioned recreation center for many activities. Hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, but campers may be dropped off as early as 8:15 a.m. and be picked up as late as 5:10 p.m

If you have not received an application by e-mail, or if you have any questions, contact co-director Robert Babb or Jack Newell, who handles day-to-day operations, at 410-516-7485.
