Welch Library Summer Classes

The Welch Library's free summer classes begin this month. Courses examine the tools and techniques needed to locate, organize, analyze and present biomedical information in both the print and electronic environments.

Participants can develop searching skills in PubMed, PsycINFO, EMBASE and other important databases. They can also increase skills in grant and abstract writing and learn about the resources available for handheld devices.

For a complete list of free classes, go to http://www.welch.jhu.edu/classes/free.

Registration is necessary, and forms can be faxed to 410-614-3810; they are available at www.welch.jhu.edu/classes/registration.html.

Center for a Livable Future Requests for Proposals

The CLF invites proposals for interdisciplinary work by faculty, fellows or students. The center will support new, visionary work that focuses on how to achieve a livable future — using resources equitably and sustainably, improving health for all and leaving a world fit for future generations.

Research that addresses the complex interactions among diet and consumption, health, food production and food security, equity, the environment and the world's resources would reflect the center's goals.

The grants are targeted primarily for collaborative projects. Eight to 10 awards of $10,000 to $20,000 will be granted for one year of support. The deadline for applications is July 15. Awards will be announced on Sept. 15. For more information contact Kelly Hoban Green at khoban@jhsph.edu, go to www.jhsph.edu/Environment/Research/ Faculty_Student_Grants/FSI_Grant.html or call 410-502-7578.

Free T'ai Chi Practice

Members of the Johns Hopkins community who want to practice t'ai chi skills during the summer are invited to free weekly sessions from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., Wednesdays, June 23 to Aug. 25 (except July 21), at the Mattin Center Dance Studio on the Homewood campus.

Formal t'ai chi instruction will not be offered, but everyone will benefit from practicing with others, from beginning students to experienced instructors. Participants may not wear street shoes.
