A Lesson in Carbo-Loading

It didn't shatter the record — which still stands at 64 kilos — but Durty Sturdy left other wannabes in shards as it took on 56 kilos to become the weight-carrying winner in the School of Engineering's recent Spaghetti Bridge Competition. The champion builders were Victoria Soto and Ryan Wade (not shown), whose structure bested all the other freshman-built pasta-and-epoxy glue entrants. The winners took home $100, and — like all students whose bridges carried a certain amount based on their size — get to skip the final in their introductory course, which is called What Is Engineering?
