Secretary of State Colin L. Powell delivered the
keynote address at the
School of Advanced International Studies' 60th
anniversary gala on Wednesday, an invitation-only event
held at the Italian Embassy in Washington. The man of the
hour, Powell was also presented with a Johns Hopkins
University President's Medal, an honor extended to
individuals who have achieved unusual distinction.
The event drew nearly 500 SAIS friends, supporters and
alumni, in addition to senior university administration,
including SAIS Dean Jessica Einhorn, President William R. Brody and
Provost Steven Knapp. Also in
attendance were former SAIS Dean Paul Wolfowitz,
AmericaOnline co-founder Jim Kimsey and ambassadors from
Italy, Great Britain, South Korea and Japan. In his speech,
Powell repeatedly praised the work of SAIS, which he said
has done much "to provide the human intellectual
infrastructure of national global security in the 21st
century."
"I would like to close by thanking you for this award,
but more importantly, thanking you and congratulating SAIS
on reaching your 60th year of outstanding achievements,
outstanding service to the world," Powell said. "And you
need to keep doing it, for six decades more, and six
decades more beyond that. We need you, the nation needs you
and above all, the world needs you."
