Student's Chamber Opera Debuts

When Daniel Thomas Davis was researching the antislavery movement for his undergraduate history studies, he stumbled upon the Hutchinsons, a colorful 19th-century family who wrote and published more than 50 antislavery and reform songs.

Among them was If I Were a Voice, the name Davis has given to the chamber opera he composed and for which he wrote the libretto — and which premieres this weekend with two performances at Peabody. Now finishing a bachelor's degree at Peabody and graduate work in history, Thomas was recently named a Marshall Scholar; he will study for two years at London's Royal Academy of Music.

The opera is funded in part by the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences as a joint project between the Peabody Camerata and the Hopkins History Department and by a Fall 2003 Provost's Undergraduate Research Award. See Music, below.
