National Search Begins for Next Dean of Arts and Sciences

A national search has begun to identify a successor to Daniel Weiss, the James B. Knapp Dean of the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences, who will be stepping down on June 30 to assume the presidency of Lafayette College.

The search committee appointed by President William R. Brody and chaired by Provost Steven Knapp is looking to establish as broad, diverse and distinguished a pool of candidates as possible. Nominations or suggestions regarding sources of information that might assist the committee in forming its pool of candidates can be forwarded to its vice chair, Pam Cranston, at pcranston@jhu.edu.

The committee, which includes Krieger School faculty and students and two faculty members from other schools, will identify and evaluate candidates for presentation to Brody and the board of trustees.

Knapp Dean of the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences are Steven Knapp (chair), senior vice president for academic affairs and provost; Pam Cranston (vice chair), associate provost for academic affairs; Karl Alexander, professor, Sociology, KSAS; Amanda Anderson, chair, English, KSAS; Jonathan Bagger, Krieger-Eisenhower Professor and chair, Physics and Astronomy, KSAS; William Connolly, Krieger-Eisenhower Professor, Political Science, KSAS; Michela Gallagher, Krieger-Eisenhower Professor, Psychological and Brain Sciences, KSAS; Jane Guyer, professor, Anthropology, KSAS; Adetokunbo "Ade" Lukan, graduate student; Charles Meneveau, professor, Mechanical Engineering, WSE; Christal Ng, undergraduate student, class of 2006; David Nichols, vice dean for education and professor, Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine, Pediatrics, School of Medicine; Steven Nichols, chair, Romance Languages, KSAS; Allen Shearn, chair, Biology, KSAS; Ronald Walters, professor, History, KSAS; and Sarah Woodson, professor, Biophysics, KSAS.

Adam Falk, who has been serving as dean of the faculty, will serve as interim dean and is in place in that role now, working in partnership with Weiss.
