Members of the university community gathered at the Johns
Hopkins monument on North Charles Street on Feb. 22 to
celebrate Commemoration Day 2005, the 129th anniversary of
the university's official opening. The small ceremony,
coordinated by the Maryland chapter of the JHU Alumni
Association, honored the date Daniel Coit Gilman was
inaugurated as the university's first president.
Among those in attendance were, from the left, James
Schaefer, president of the Maryland chapter; Jerome
Schyndman, executive assistant to President William R.
Brody; Wendy Brody, wife of the president; and Barry
Richmond, a member of the Maryland chapter's executive
committee, who gave the Commemoration Day address.
