The works of more than 40 artists from the Baltimore
Clayworks studio showcase the numerous possibilities of
their art in Maryland Clay, a juried exhibition of more
than 80 works at the George Peabody Library, which runs
from Tuesday, Feb. 1, through Thursday, March 31.
Maryland Clay is presented in conjunction with Tour de
Clay, a six-week celebration of ceramic art featuring more
than 170 exhibitions throughout the state of Maryland.
"We are delighted to be among the cultural and
educational institutions in Mt. Vernon collaborating in
this tribute to ceramic art and artists," said Winston
Tabb, dean of university libraries at Johns Hopkins.
"Maryland Clay is a wonderful complement to the Peabody's
rich collection in the decorative arts."
Juror Jimmy Clark, executive director of the Peters
Valley Craft Education Center in Layton, N.J., describes
the show as "an eclectic exhibition filled with variety and
creativity."
"The selected works vary in scale from miniature to
monolithic, from fully functional to strictly sculptural,
from traditional to cutting edge," he said. "Almost every
conceivable technique employed in constructing and firing
ceramic art is represented in this show."
Clark and Deborah Bedwell, executive director of
Baltimore Clayworks, will be the featured speakers at the
opening reception at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 3. The
reception is free and open to the public, but guests must
call 410-578-1919 to register.
The public may view the works of art between 9 a.m.
and 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and from noon to 5
p.m. on Sundays. Additional showings will take place from 5
to 9 p.m. on Thursday, March 3, and Friday, March 18.
