New Transitions in Business Program Responds to Changing Market Needs

By Chris Godack

Responding to the changing needs of the region's rapidly growing adult student market, Johns Hopkins is offering an innovative Transitions in Business Program specifically designed for those individuals planning to start their own business or small enterprise or who are considering an MBA degree. The inaugural cohort is now enrolling students for a March 1 start, with another group expected to begin June 1.

"The goal of this new program is to provide an alternative to those adult students who need essential business knowledge and skills but who are not ready to commit to an advanced business degree program," said Toni Ungaretti, assistant dean of the Undergraduate Studies Division of the School of Professional Studies in Business and Education.

"We're seeing more and more adult students looking for real-world business knowledge to start their own business or advance their career but aren't ready to take the traditional academic route," Ungaretti said. "Today's adult students are highly motivated and focused, and they are looking for flexible program formats that meet their specific professional needs and fit into their busy life style. This new transition program is responding to that need."

Unlike traditional graduate offerings, this one-year program is an interactive, experiential learning environment that incorporates real business problems and case studies to teach the fundamentals of business: economics, accounting, statistics, financial management, marketing and leadership. Collaborative peer learning is enhanced in a cohort of students who take all their classes together. Courses are offered on alternating Tuesdays and Saturdays. "The advantage of this transitional program is that should the student decide he or she wants to pursue an advanced degree path, the 18-credit certificate fulfills the prerequisite requirements for the Hopkins MBA. It's a win-win proposition for the student," Ungaretti said.

Information sessions will be held on the Homewood campus from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 1, and from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 3. To sign up online, go to business.jhu.edu/when.
