Obituary: Enzo Grilli, 63, SAIS Professor of International Economics

Grilli

Enzo Grilli, a professor whose ties to SAIS spanned nearly 40 years, died of a heart attack on Oct. 28 in Washington, D.C. He was 63.

Grilli, a native of Genoa, Italy, graduated in 1968 from the Bologna Center, received his doctorate from SAIS in 1975 and joined the faculty in 1976 for two years as an adjunct professor in the International Economics Program. He also served as an adjunct professor from 1981 to 1982, 1986 to 1993 and 1995 to 1997.

In 1998, he was awarded a two-year appointment to serve as the AGIP Chair in International Economics at the Bologna Center. Most recently, he had been serving as professor of international economics at the Washington campus. Always a favorite of students, he won the Johns Hopkins Alumni Association's Excellence in Teaching Award in 1997 and 2001.

In addition to his academic roles at SAIS, Grilli had a distinguished career working for international organizations, the Italian government and several Italian universities. During his professional years in Washington, he held several leadership positions at the World Bank, including serving as director of development policy and as director of the economic advisory staff. He later represented Italy and other constituency countries as executive director on the boards of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank. He also held a JD degree from the University of Genova.

"Everyone who knew Professor Grilli valued his warm-hearted friendship as well as his devotion to the students of SAIS. He was a scholar, a teacher and a wonderful human being. This is very sad news for the school, where he will be deeply missed," said Dean Jessica P. Einhorn in a letter informing the SAIS community of Grilli's death. "From Washington and Bologna, our hearts go out to his wife, Marlie, and two daughters, Vola and Mary."

A memorial service was held Wednesday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Washington.
