D.J. Haldeman Named Marketing and Communications VP at JHM

Dalal J. Haldeman

Dalal J. Haldeman, an experienced health care industry executive and a specialist in marketing, public relations and business development, is the new vice president for marketing and corporate communications for Johns Hopkins Medicine.

Haldeman was selected after a national search to direct the full-service internal and external communications and marketing office for JHM. She will be moving to Hopkins in February after seven years as director of marketing operations for the Cleveland Clinic Health System.

In making the announcement, Edward D. Miller, dean and CEO of Johns Hopkins Medicine, and Ronald R. Peterson, president of The Johns Hopkins Hospital and Health System, said in a joint statement, "Dalal Haldeman is unusually well-prepared to enhance and lead an already robust enterprise in new strategic directions at a time of intense competition among academic medical centers and tremendous growth at Johns Hopkins Medicine."

Steve Thompson, senior vice president of JHM, said, "Her background in quality improvement, strategic planning, market research, clinical practice marketing, branding and Web site development, as well as her management experience, brings many essential skills to an enormously complex set of institutions with multiple communications needs."

Haldeman earned a bachelor's degree in biology and chemistry in 1972 and a master's degree in nutrition in 1975 from the American University of Beirut. She went on to receive a doctorate in food science from Pennsylvania State University in 1979 and an MBA from Cleveland State University in 1991.

Prior to her current position at Cleveland Clinic, she was vice president of Pediatric Medical Management and director of marketing and business development at Cleveland Clinic Children's Hospital for Rehabilitation from 1995 to 1998. Before that, she was associate vice president/consultant at Sterling Health Capital Management in New York, general manager of Meridia Healthcare System/Marriott Corp. in Cleveland, corporate director of quality for the MetroHealth System in Cleveland and assistant professor/manager of ambulatory services at Presbyterian Hospital of the University of Pittsburgh.

Haldeman serves as president of the Epilepsy Association of Northeast Ohio and on the editorial board of Redspring Magazine. She is also on the boards of the Institute for Creative Leadership, the Society for Healthcare Strategy and Market Development, and Central Hospital Services. She is affiliated with the American College of Healthcare Executives and the Forum for Healthcare Strategists. She is past president of the Healthcare Executives Association of Northeast Ohio and former vice president of the Cleveland International Program.

She has earned numerous awards for quality-related Web site products, including the eHealthcare Strategy and Trends Leadership Award in 2004 for Quality Web Site development.

JHM's newly named Office of Marketing and Corporate Communications provides marketing, media relations, advertising, electronic media, publications writing and production, design, Web site development, event planning, special project management and other services to faculty and staff of its member institutions.

The office has been led for almost a quarter century by Elaine K. Freeman, who is retiring as vice president for corporate communications.
