The 2007-2008 Dean's Teaching Fellowship

Graduate students from the School of Arts and Sciences are invited to apply for the Dean's Teaching Fellowship Program, designed to foster innovation in the undergraduate curriculum, give advanced graduate students experience teaching their own undergraduate courses and provide funding for graduate research.

Applicants must be in residence for the 2007-2008 academic year and must have achieved ABD status before teaching in the program. Note that fellowships may not be deferred and that former Dean's Teaching Fellows are ineligible. Fellows will teach a one-semester course and receive a salary of $7,000 and 20 percent of that semester's tuition. For those receiving other fellowships with specific restrictions against outside money, the salary will be offered in the form of a research fund.

Applications must be submitted to the Dean's Office through the applicant's department. Fellows will work under the supervision of the faculty members who nominate them. Supervising faculty should expect to review syllabi, confer about grading and other pedagogical matters, observe and critique classroom performance, and submit a written evaluation of the course to the Dean's Office at the end of the semester.

By Wednesday, Oct. 11, applicants must submit to their chairs an application form (may be obtained from the department's administrative assistant); a letter of nomination from the faculty member who would serve as mentor explaining the relevance of the proposed course to the student's area of specialization and its importance for the department's undergraduate teaching program; a proposal explaining what the course will cover and how; a course description of 30 words or less, suitable for publication in the "Schedule of Courses"; an explanation of the course's significance for undergraduates; and a current curriculum vitae.

The deadline for applications is Oct. 18.

Statistics Research Funding RFPs

The Acheson J. Duncan Fund for the Advancement of Research in Statistics requests proposals for small grants to support research projects in statistics, probability and stochastic processes. Proposals should be brief, preferably no more than three single-sided pages; provide itemized expense estimates; and be signed by each investigator. Proposals may be submitted at any time to committee chair John C. Wierman, Applied Mathematics and Statistics Department, 302 Whitehead Hall.

 

Funding for Prostate Cancer Research

Funding is available to support multidisciplinary research in prostate cancer through the Patrick C. Walsh Prostate Cancer Research Fund. Awards of $50,000 to $100,000 for up to two years are available to fund career development and developmental research programs (pilot projects). New ideas are encouraged. The deadline for applications is Monday, Jan. 8.
