Bigger and brighter were the themes for Homewood's second annual Lighting of the Quads, held last Tuesday night.

Lampposts across the campus — on Levering Plaza, the Beach and the Wyman, Keyser and freshman quads — now twinkle in white holiday lights, courtesy of the Office of Facilities Management staff. In addition this year, Gilman Hall's columns are bedecked in holly.

To celebrate as the lights were turned on, more than 300 students, staff and faculty came together to drink hot chocolate and cider, eat cookies and doughnuts, and listen to holiday songs played by the JHU Pep Band and pop songs sung by student a cappella groups the Mental Notes and Allnighters.

The festivities were conceived last year by the undergraduate Student Council and this year coordinated and publicized by the Class of 2008.

Paula Burger, dean of undergraduate education and the university coordinator of the event, said that the new tradition shows signs of taking hold.

"Each year we want to kick it up a notch: add decorations, excitement and bring in even more people," Burger said. "I would love to see 1,000 people from the Hopkins community gathered in the quads next year for this wonderful ceremony."
