Black History Month Blood Drive

— For the second year, as part of Black History Month, and with the assistance of the Black Student Union, a Valentine’s Day blood drive on the Homewood campus will mark the contributions of Charles Drew, the pioneering African-American physician whose research made it possible for people to donate and receive transfusions of blood. The drive is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 6:15 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 14, in the Glass Pavilion.

To address the shortage of bone marrow donors from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds, faculty, staff and students of color may register as potential bone marrow donors at the drive between 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. No appointment is needed to register as a potential marrow donor.

As further incentives, romantic comedy films will be shown in the waiting area, and all participants will receive an official Red Cross drawstring tote bag.

By giving blood, or filling in for co-workers while they donate, you help the Red Cross replenish reserves that are sorely depleted in the winter due to donor vacations, holidays and inclement weather.

 

CLF Predoctoral Fellowship Program

— The Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future announces the fourth year of funding for its Predoctoral Fellowship Program. These fellowships support predoctoral students who are committed to the discovery and/or application of knowledge about the environmental, economic, social and health impacts of industrial animal production practices in the United States and/or abroad.

Students are eligible for support during any stage of their doctoral program including those who are applying to a doctoral program at the time of this application. Students must be enrolled in any one of the divisions of Johns Hopkins University in a Ph.D. or Dr.P.H. program.

Each predoctoral fellowship provides one year of support in an amount up to $50,000 to be used for tuition, stipend and/or research expenses, depending on individual need. Applications are due by March 15; awards will be announced May 1. Application details are available at www.jhsph.edu/clf/research.
