Monday, June 5, will be marked by significant changes
to Homewood campus access. Some are temporary; others are
permanent.
Beginning that day and continuing through Sunday, Aug.
27, the Homewood campus service road from the Merrick
(South) Gate, running past Shriver Hall to the Mattin
Center, the Eisenhower Library and other locations, will be
closed to normal traffic; shuttle buses will be rerouted;
and parking in the affected area will be unavailable. These
changes are necessary to enable the construction of
utilities for the Decker Quadrangle project.
In addition, a change has been made in the
Ellerslie/Eastern-Homewood shuttle that will go into effect
May 30.
A summary of the changes follows.
Shuttle buses: Effective June 5, the
Homewood-JHMI shuttle route will be permanently altered.
The new Homewood staging area and scheduled departure time
point will be on University Parkway beside the
Bunting-Meyerhoff Interfaith Center. This will be the first
loading zone. Southbound, the primary loading zone will
become Charles Commons (St. Paul at 33rd Street), but until
Charles Commons construction is complete, the corner of St.
Paul and 31st will be used. Northbound, the primary dropoff
point will be Charles Commons. Other stop locations will
remain the same.
The Ellerslie/Eastern-Homewood shuttle will not stop
at Shriver Hall. Riders may board at either the Eisenhower
Library or the Wyman Park Building. This change will take
effect on Tuesday, May 30.
Revised schedules will be available at least one week
prior to the road closure.

Parking: No parking will be available in the
affected area. Faculty hangtag parking will be relocated to
the Stony Run Visitor Lot or the San Martin Center Garage.
Handicapped parking will be relocated to the San Martin
Center Garage. Transport vehicles will deliver parking
patrons to and from the garage throughout the closure
period. The vehicles will be available to ambulatory
patrons, but preference will be given to disabled persons.
A message has been sent to parking patrons in the affected
area, describing the options and requiring a response to
receive a parking assignment during the closure.
Deliveries: All purchasers are asked to assist
JHU Purchasing Services by notifying their vendors to
redirect as many deliveries as possible to Homewood Central
Receiving. Central Receiving makes deliveries to campus via
microvans several times each day. Items received as late
as 4 p.m. are usually delivered the same day. The
receiving dock is located at 3001 Remington Ave. (side
entrance), 21211. For deliveries that cannot be redirected,
vehicles will be allowed through the construction zone
between 11 a.m. and noon, Monday through Friday. To make

Events: All building entrances will remain
open. Bus access for events will be handled on a
case-by-case basis.
Pedestrians: The service road will be closed to
pedestrians. Routes to the south end of campus will include
the steps and paths west of Clark and Hodson halls, and the
public path bisecting the Sculpture Garden east of the
Baltimore Museum of Art. The shorter route through the
Sculpture Garden is open 11 a.m. to dusk, Tuesday through
Sunday.
Bowman Drive: Bowman Drive, the roadway to
Clark and Hodson halls from Wyman Park Drive, will reopen
by Monday, June 5.
Emergencies: Access for emergency vehicles will
be maintained at all times through the collaborative
efforts of Facilities; the contractor, Whiting-Turner; and
Security.
Charles Street: As some readers know, project
planners considered creating temporary vehicle access from
Charles Street below the Mattin Center. This will not be
done, however, for safety reasons.
