In Brief

Next 'Gazette' is last before biweekly summer schedule

With next week's issue, The Gazette will begin its biweekly summer schedule. There will be no edition on June 5, so the Tuesday, May 30, calendar will include all events scheduled between that day and Monday, June 12. Calendar items and classifieds should be submitted for that issue by 5 p.m. on Tuesday, May 23, to gazette@jhu.edu or faxed to 443-287-9920.

The numbers are in for next fall's freshman class at Homewood

The high school seniors' responses are in, and so are the numbers for the class of 2010: 1,217 freshmen are set to enroll this fall in the schools of Arts and Sciences and Engineering. They were chosen from a record-breaking 13,863 applicants — 2,585 more students than applied the previous year. (All figures are official as of May 9, following the May 1 reply deadline.)

Also of note for the record books is that this will be the biggest incoming class that the Homewood campus has ever seen, even as the admissions process became more selective than ever, with an admit rate of just 27 percent. Like many records, though, this one could have an asterisk next to it after the typical "summer melt" occurs, according to director of Undergraduate Admissions John Latting, who expects the actual number of incoming freshmen to be around 1,160.

Some other fast facts about the class:

The split between the Krieger and Whiting schools is 63/37.

Forty-eight percent are women and 52 percent men — a ratio that held steady from last year's admitted freshman class.

The top five states in order are New Jersey, New York, Maryland, California and Pennsylvania.

Ninety-two of the enrollees are Hispanic, an all-time high, as is the number of students from underrepresented minority groups.

A total of $12 million in need-based grant support has been offered to the class, according to Ellen Frishberg, director of Student Financial Services. The class includes 88 Bloomberg Scholars, 20 Hodson Merit Scholars, 18 Baltimore Scholars and two Westgate Scholars.

Women's Network honors four with Leadership Award

At its annual spring luncheon, held May 12 at APL's Kossiakoff Center, the Johns Hopkins Women's Network presented the 2006 Women's Leadership Award to four women representing the organization's chapters. The criteria were the ability to motivate and develop leadership skills in others, act as a strong mentor, increase knowledge of critical issues facing the university and its divisions; and strengthen commitment of the faculty, staff and students to the university.

Selected from three dozen nominees were Claire Bogdanski, associate dean of finance and administration, School of Nursing, for the JHMI chapter; Crystal Simpson, assistant dean of student affairs, Office of Diversity for Medical Students, and assistant professor of geriatric medicine, School of Medicine, Bayview Chapter; M. Ann Garrison Darrin, program manager, Research and Technology Center at APL, APL Chapter; and Adriene G. Breckenridge, senior academic adviser, Krieger School of Arts and Sciences, Homewood Chapter.
