Lasker Award Celebration

Colleagues gathered last Monday at the School of Medicine to congratulate Carol Greider on receiving the 2006 Albert Lasker Award for Basic Medical Research. She shares the recognition with two former colleagues for predicting and discovering telomerase. Greider, the Daniel Nathans Professor and director of Molecular Biology and Genetics, is joined here by her husband, Nathaniel Comfort, of the History of Medicine Department, and their children, Gwendolyn, 6, and Charles, 11. Joseph Gall of the Carnegie Institution's Embryology Department, and an adjunct professor of biology at Johns Hopkins, also won a Lasker Award. Gall's award, for Special Achievement in Medical Science, recognizes his distinguished 57-year career as a founder of modern cell biology and the field of chromosome structure and function. The 61st Lasker Awards luncheon will be held on Friday in New York.
