Join Bigs in School

Johns Hopkins is hoping to begin a successful partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Maryland and the nearby Margaret Brent Elementary School. Volunteers will spend one hour every Tuesday during lunch to mentor an elementary age student who is in need of an adult friend.

Volunteers play games, help with schoolwork, spend time and, most important, have fun with a child. Employees from all levels and areas of the university are encouraged to pursue this volunteer opportunity.

For more information, contact Melissa Mort at 443-286-8590 or mmort@biglittle.org.

Elementary School Mentors Needed

JHHS Community Services is teaming with Collington Square Elementary School in East Baltimore to recruit 40 Hopkins faculty, employees and students to join its after-school program and be a one-on-one mentor to children in grades 2-7.

The program is specifically for children who received failing grades, or who have one or more parents who are incarcerated. Mentors can volunteer any amount of time that they can spare (at least once per week) and can choose their own schedule, 3:30 to 6 p.m., Monday to Friday.

To volunteer or for more information, contact Carolyn Chance at 410-614-2430 or cchance8@jhmi.edu.

Statistics Research Funding Request for Proposals

The Acheson J. Duncan Fund for the Advancement of Research in Statistics requests proposals for small grants to support research projects in statistics, probability and stochastic processes.

Faculty and students throughout Hopkins are eligible to apply for funding for collaborative projects with a member of the faculty in the Applied Mathematics and Statistics Department. Most grants will be less than $5,000.

Proposals should be brief, preferably no more than three single-sided pages; provide itemized expense estimates; and be signed by each investigator. Proposals may be submitted at any time to committee chair John Wierman, Applied Mathematics and Statistics Department, 302 Whitehead Hall.

Museum Shops Sale

The museum shops at Evergreen House and Homewood House are having an inventory reduction sale during February, with 10 percent off on all books and 25 percent to 50 percent off on all other merchandise. Member discounts will not be honored on 40 percent to 50 percent items, and prior purchases are excluded.

The sale is scheduled for Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. Free parking is available at both museums. For more information, call 410-516-0341 (Evergreen) and 410-516-5589 (Homewood).
