Evergreen House Scholars' Artwork Goes On Display Event
By Heather Egan Stalfort
Historic Houses

In conjunction with the exhibition, artist Nestor Topchy and his mother, Nora, will demonstrate 'pysanky,' the art of Ukranian egg decorating, on Sunday. See Special Events.

Evergreen House Museum this week opens Building a Legacy: Evergreen Scholars at MICA, a special exhibition featuring current work by five of the many graduates of the Maryland Institute College of Art whose training as innovative and successful visual artists has benefited from the Evergreen House Foundation Scholarship Program. First awarded in 1965, the scholarship supports the efforts of exceptionally talented undergraduate students who have attained the highest level of academic achievement. The exhibit will run from Friday, March 9, through Sunday, June 3, in the museum's exhibition gallery and historic rooms.

More than 30 works by Richard Cleaver, Rita Natarova, Lauren Ross, Colleen Ostrander and Nestor Topchy will be on display.

Cleaver, a Baltimore-based sculptor, creates meticulously rendered figures in gold leaf and semiprecious gems that reference reliquaries and icons while resonating with mystery and nostalgia. A solo show of his work will be held this year at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.

Natarova's paintings capture humanity in relation to time, and play with time's ability to render anything senseless. She came to America from Russia and currently lives and works in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Ross creates work on paper, costumes, performances and paper-based sculptural objects with an interest in historical art; in particular, Dadaism and Modernism. She lives and works in Baltimore.

Ostrander, an art therapist in Chicago, uses paper, thread and wax to construct surfaces that reference landscapes of the earth and of the body.

Topchy is a sculptor and performance artist whose work references patterns found in pysanky (Ukrainian Easter eggs) and Ukranian textiles, and the sacred art of icon painting. He lives and works in Houston. From 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 11, Topchy and his mother, Nora, will demonstrate pysanky in conjunction with the exhibition.

The exhibition marks the 55th anniversary of the Evergreen House Foundation, established and endowed in 1952 by arts patron and cultural maverick Alice Warder Garrett to continue her legacy of supporting emerging artists, and to conserve the Garrett family's collections of paintings, Asian art, sculpture and rare books. Bequeathed to Johns Hopkins in 1942 by former Ambassador John Work Garrett, Alice's husband, Evergreen is open to the public as both an intimate collection of fine and decorative art, and a vibrant, innovative venue for contemporary artists.

Building a Legacy was organized and curated by Jacqueline O'Regan, curator of Evergreen House Museum. A series of programs and gallery talks will augment the exhibition, on view during regularly scheduled guided tours of the museum, offered on the hour 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and noon to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday (last tour departs at 3 p.m.). Admission to the exhibition and related programs is free with regular museum admission: $6 adults, $5 seniors, $3 students and children 6 and up; free for museum members and JHU affiliates with ID.
